JordanCon 2024 Art Show
This page lists all of my pieces from the JordanCon 2024 Art Show. Each image links to a higher quality version. The first eight images were entered directly as 2D art, and the last three images show photographs of lego builds that were entered as 3D art. Six of the eight 2D entries were created as digital renders, and the other two used photoshop to create scenes using a combination of actual photographs. All photographs used were taken by me, and no AI art was used for any portion of this work.
To Kill
This piece is a digital render of the prologue to The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. It depicts Szeth fighting with two Kholin guards in a hallway of the Kholin palace, next to a display of the ten Heralds. The render was made using Blender.
Shadesmar
This piece is a digital render of Shallan's first visit to Shadesmar in chapter 45 of The Way of Kings. It shows Shallan in a rolling sea of dark beads under a dark sky. The render was made using Blender. Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop were used for the graphics for the UV layouts on Shallan's face and torso. Shallan's havah is based on official artwork by Dan dos Santos in Words of Radiance.
Navani's Notebook
This scene is a combination of multiple photographs of physical builds. The airship was photographed over a bluescreen, as were the individual Parshendi/Fused. The clouds are from a photograph I took out of an airplane window. The various photos were combined using Adobe Photoshop. The sail was created by ironing a piece of fabric onto a piece of parchment paper, cutting it to 8.5" x 11", then printing using an inkjet printer. The printed lego elements were created by sending parts and vector graphics to a printer who specializes in printing on blank lego elements using a flatbed UV digital printer.
Bridgebound
This piece is a digital render of Kaladin's arrival at the Shattered Plains in chapter 4 of The Way of Kings. The render was made using Blender. Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop were used for the graphics for the UV layouts on the minifigs and banners. This scene contains roughly 8 million virtual bricks; this was accomplished using procedural modeling.
Salas Rising
This piece is a digital render of Kaladin's time in the Unclaimed Hills in chapters 2 and 4 of The Way of Kings. The render was made using Blender. Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop were used for the graphics for the UV layouts on the minifigs.
Chasm Training
This piece is a digital render of Kaladin and Bridge 4 training in the chasms during chapter 49 of The Way of Kings. The render was made using Blender. Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop were used for the graphics for the UV layouts on the minifigs.
Second Sight
This piece is a digital render of Shallan, Jasnah, and Taravanginan in chapter 29 of The Way of Kings. The render was made using Blender. Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop were used for the graphics for the UV layouts on the minifigs.
Forced Perspective
This scene is a combination of multiple photographs. The physical lego build was photographed over a bluescreen, and the build consisted of three segments (foreground, mountain, plain) that were staggered in depth with respect to the camera. The clouds are from a photograph I took over the ocean so I could capture the sky down to the horizon. The two photos were combined using Adobe Photoshop.
Urithiru
This is a physical build based on Ben McSweeney's official artwork of Urithiru in Oathbringer and Rhythm of War by Brandon Sanderson. It separates into four pieces for travel. Even using microscale minifigures, the scale is way off, as each microfig actually represents the approximate volume that a chasmfiend would take up, rather than a minifigure. There should also be 18 floors per tier rather than just four. The Oathgate plateaus are also a bit undersized; I decreased their diameter to 70% of the actual relative size so that I could fit the entire build on the available table at the art show.
Brickshops and Bonedust
This is a physical build of Bookshops and Bonedust by Travis Baldree. The printed lego elements were created by sending parts and vector graphics to a printer who specializes in printing on blank lego elements using a flatbed UV digital printer. Potroast was difficult -- I used an existing lego dog as the base, then drilled holes and used glue to attach small wings from a third-party company (BrickWarriors). For his face and back legs, I started with paint, then applied decals for the eyes and mouth. Fern's head is from CrazyBricks who makes custom parts for Redwall-themed minifigures.
Performances in Samara
This is a physical build of chapter 37, Performances in Samara, from The Fires of Heaven by Robert Jordan. The printed lego elements were created by sending parts and vector graphics to a printer who specializes in printing on blank lego elements using a flatbed UV digital printer.
