Chasmfiend

Chasmfiend fan artThis page contains my lego fan art of a chasmfiend from The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson.  The build is based on official artwork by Ben McSweeney (a.k.a. Inkthinker) in the form of sketches from Words of Radiance.  Those sketches are meant to be in-world, meaning they are depicting sketches described within the text of the novels, drawn by the character Shallan Davar.  In case you'd like to compare, Ben McSweeney's original art is available on Brandon Sanderson's official site.  The artwork from Words of Radiance is located here.

Free building instructions, including a PDF file and an XML parts list, are available on my lego building instructions page.

Spoilers: negligible.

You can view the files either through the gallery below or the individual image links just below the gallery. Below that, I have included a discussion of the builds and some of the customization involved, followed by copyright and use information. If you're on mobile, the menus are at the bottom of the page.

About this build

This is my fourth chasmfiend design.  Earlier versions were from the chasmfiend hunt in The Way of Kings (built in April 2014), the chasm scenes in Words of Radiance (built in March 2015), and Shallan's Sketchbook (built in November 2016).  When designing it, I favored posability and lightness over strength, so that it could be displayed nicely with minimal supports.  There are still three supports necessary to hold up the head and the tail, as lego does tend to flex under pressure.  This build was on display at JordanCon 2023, and I am working on instructions.

All four forelegs can pivot up and down and side to side at the shoulder, and up and down at the two knee joints and the foot.  All fourteen rear legs can pivot up and down and side to side.  The main body has seven side to side pivot points.  The head can be tilted up and down, and the tail has several ball joints allowing free range of motion.  The mandibles each also have eight degrees of freedom in their motion.
